UNIVERSITY OF MALAWI University Office PRESS RELEASE 2010/2011 University of Malawi admissions The University of Malawi is pleased to announce results of the 2010 University Entrance Examinations and names of candidates who have been selected to pursue various programmes for the 2010/2011 academic year. This year's selection was done using the equitable system of selecting candidates to public institutions of higher learning. Under this system, the top ten candidates from each district were offered places first and the rest were selected based on both merit and the size of the population of their districts. The University wishes to inform the general public that the selected candidates have been admitted using classroom space and not on bed space as has been the case in the past. This means that all government sponsored year 1 students have been admitted on non-residential basis. The general public is further informed that all the selected government sponsored year 1 students admitted in the 2010/11 academic year shall be paid a monthly allowance for a duration of each semester of an academic year on pro rata basis which they shall use to pay for their accommodation and meals instead of being provided with accommodation and meals as is the case with current residential (government sponsored) students. Those selected shall therefore have to look for their own accommodation and use the above allowance to pay for the same and meals. Students who would like to stay on campus shall have to apply for accommodation and, if accepted, they shall pay the College for their accommodation and meals. Because Colleges shall not have the capacity to accommodate all the government sponsored students on campus, allocation of bed space shall be done based on criteria to be announced by individual Colleges. In 2010, a total of 9700 candidates wrote the University Entrance Examinations (UEE) and of these 6924 were males and 2776 were females representing 71% and 29% respectively. Out of the above, 7878 candidates passed (i.e. reached a combined aggregate of UEE and MSCE pass mark of 50% and above), representing 81% pass rate. Of the candidates that passed 5846 were males and 2032 were females. From those that passed the 2010 UEE, 2088 candidates have been selected to continue their studies at the University of Malawi. Of these, 1123 are males and 965 are females representing 54% and 46% respectively. All successful candidates are further advised that tuition fees is K80,000 per academic year and payable in two equal instalments of K40,000 on registration in each semester. Furthermore, candidates are advised that the date for reporting to their respective Colleges will be announced in due course by each College of the University of Malawi. The list of successful candidates is available on all official notice boards of our constituent Colleges as well as on the University of Malawi website - www.unima.mw and on SDNP website - www.sdnp.org.mw The University is also informing the public that this year, the University shall not invite applications for non-residential programmes as all its available classroom space has been filled by the government sponsored students. Finally, the general public may wish to note that tuition fees for all government sponsored undergraduate students have been raised to K80,000 from K25,000 per academic year. Similarly, fees for all mature entry and postgraduate students have been rationalised.
